Durbin, Cullerton rally behind forced voter registration at DMV’s
Senator Dick Durbin and State Senate President John Cullerton are joining the push to automatically register Illinoisans to vote when their information is updated through the Department of Motor Vehicles. Supporters of the bill say it would help voters that move often to stay registered, while skeptics say this could create an uninformed voter base. As of last year, Illinois election officials also re-register voters when they change their address at the post office.
Heritage Foundation Senior Fellow Hans von Spakovsky says the bill wouldn’t create higher turnout, just more registered voters.
Of a total 7.5 million registered voters in Illinois, about 3.7 million voted in the 2014 general election.
